They Dont Make It Like They Used Too…

This early morn, on Channel [V]’s Rockshow for AUDIOSLAVE. And they aired a few old videos of RATM and Soundgarden. I realized how we, my generation, were blessed with good musics. Pity the new skool, the new millenia musics, sounded simillar to one another. its getting old as well. Pop punk hip hop boy band rumpus stuckus wearing “I DID THIS TO GET LAID” tagg. Singing about car, cash and hos. Come on. Where the hunger on making good musics, not just pop.

I pity the new age millenia generation. Being feed with crap and being told that it was great musics, or bands. And worst more, our local scene have already died with the blooming of crap lovey dovey “meratap” songs. No wonder why we turned our ear on for Indonesian musics that have originality. How I pity my brother who loves Simple Plan, Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, or the so called the new punk pop musics, with their lil brothers tight shirts. Come on, you need to get to the old school.

My generations, we’are blessed with good and astonishing musics. We were born in the age of the dying Gun N Roses, the declaring of Metallica immortallity, the new age of alternatives musis, the birth of grunge, where local scene malay bands are still have credibilities. Those were the days of good musics.

I still remembered the days when i was on my early years of secondary schooling, where me and my friends exchange mix tape of our favourite band. My friend introduced me to SOUNDGARDEN, adn the legendary track of theirs, Black Hole Sun. This were the time when I was still hangovered from BEASTIE BOYS and KRISS KROSS’s Jump Jump (later remake by POP SHUVIT). After SOUNDGARDEN, I turn myself to the Seattle sound of PEARL JAM. Tracks like Spin The Black Circle, and the haunting Jeremy (now consider of one of the breakthrough of rock history).

Then, the legendary bleached blonde haired Kurt Cobain with NIRVANA which the world still considers as one of greatest band/musician ever graced the history of musics. Who could deny that? Until today, their remake of DAVID BOWIE’s The Man Who Sold The World still comes up regularly on my playlist everyday. Polly, Come As You Are, Sliver, and the worldwide known Smells Like Teen Spirits, just to name a few, were the songs me and my friends like to pretend playing and jammed to.

Proudly, I consider myself not to be a mainstreamer music lover at the moment. When my colleages listen to locals bands singing malay tunes, I was lucky to have friends that listen to something else. Back on those days, my mother called this music loud and confused. But it was my time, out time, my generation.

Next, I was driven to a young band called SILVERCHAIR from way down under with their debut album Frogstomp. SILVERCHAIR is still my favourite band to date. The other Aussie band me and my generation looked to is THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. Which later break up and form ZWAN(which sucks) and then broke up one more time and now BILLY CORGAN is moving as solo.

My raging and rebellious years paired me up with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE, a California band, I was late knowing the band, but after Bulls On Parade, and Born From A Broken Man and a few others human rights fighting tracks, I became one of the great follower of RATM. Which later, ZACH DE LA ROCHA parted ways and break up. Now TOM MORELLO and mates formed a new band called AUDIOSLAVES with CHRIS CORNELL from SOUNDGARDEN. In that day also, STONE TEMPLE PILOTS are heading to an end also. Lots of bands are missing and breaking up, a tragic phase for musics.

A couple of years later, locally, the music scene was raging with alternatives bands. Who couldnt remember the old OAG, BUTTERFINGER, and REPUBLICK OF BRICKFIELDS. Back where EMMET of BUTTERFINGER standing in a room with air blown Ultraman figures adn standing under a bulb singing. I called this phase as a Do It Yourself age, where Positive Tones of Ahmad Idzham was the genius behind this revolution. Where have NICE STUPID PLAYGROUND gone? NITA, INTOXICATED, and a few others that i couldnt remember their band names. In my opinion, if the local music scene havent been strucked by this alternatives revolution phase, we couldnt get to see SEVEN COLLAR TSHIRT, or DISAGREE, or CASSANDRA, or SGT WEENERS ARM, or PRANA, POP SHUVIT(although they were mainly influenced by LINKIN PARK, no offense), and a few more emerging talented bands.

Back in the old days, punk is still punk, no pop added. Where pop punk is still respectable in GREENDAY and BLINK182. Nowdays, pop punk is just full of wannabies(is this the correct way to spell it?). Having a good band name doesnt mean they could be succesfull, maybe a hit, but not succesfull. A hit with the groupies, but not for a music enthusiast like me.

And then, there are geniuses, who creates wonder with musics. RADIOHEAD’s OK Computer catch my ear. But RADIOHEAD dissapointed me in their few albums later. Then i turned to the happy joy WEEZER and still stciking with my roots of RATM and SILVERCHAIR, and the came the new age of NuRock.

Before LINKIN PARK, there were FOO FIGHTERS(which form by ex NIRVANA’s DAVID GHROLL), BUTTHOLE SURFER, EVERCLEAR, HOOTIE AND THE BLOWFISH, FASTBALL, DEFTONES, and a few others band that made me who I am today that I couldnt remember at the the time of posting this. Ngahahha…

LINKIN PARK, INCUBUS, POD, HOOBASTANK, AUDIOSLAVE, MUSE, COLDPLAY, THE STROKES, and others.

Aside of the pop punk brats, generation nowdays are fed with the so called pop gothic musics and the glam rock rebirth. Look at MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE, THE USED, for gothic rebirth and THE KILLERS for the glam rock era reborn.

Nowdays, mainstream and underground only have a thin line seperations, of simmilarity and concept. Its hard to know or declare who’s mainstream and who’s undergrounds. Its all the same. I’m not speakign as a specialist or a person who knows a lot of musics, but speaking adn writing as one of music lovers in the world and this article are based on my experienced.

In the local scene, originality are always mistaken. Take DISAGREE as an example, just because the lead have the EDDIE VADDERISH voice, the mass claimed it as unoriginal. Come on, give the young lads a break. They are trying to set the mark and follow their peer footsteps. SEVEN COLLAR TSHIRT, have the same sound and style as RADIOHEAD and SILVERCHAIR combined, and still keeping it original, a sound of their own. And let the so called undergroundist have thier spotlight and support as the avant garde to their kind of music. We’re losing talents by day.

Selamat Tinggal Dunia seems to be BUTTERFINGER last album. Where else we could find talent such as them in our scene? And yes, they are talented, geniuses of the generation.

The DIY concept are also taking its toll, rather than making commendable and rememberable musics, these band are just focusing on making names within the gigs circle, and still short of producing and hardcopying their work through a desireable medium so it could be mass produced and recognized as a product of effort and love for musics.

And please stop with this EMO/SCREAMOish band era. Theres a lot more to new musics than that genre. I would sure like to bragged about my local bands, but then, who cares of bands singing the same tunes and genre. Come on, get up and be creatives.

Thats it…

esok saja…
